As the arrival of our birthday party rolls around, here at Folklore HQ we’ve been taking a look back at some of our favourite moments from the last 5 years. With 65 monthly showcases, 20+ shows this year alone, 150+ featured artists and 3 records we've certainly been busy making memories...
Together The People Festival: Folklore Stage
2015 saw the launch of a new music and arts festival in Brighton: Together The People. With a heavy emphasis on community, Preston Park became home for our busiest weekend yet. With 20+ acts over two days, the Folklore stage welcomed the 5000 strong crowd with some our favourite local artists including Mara Simpson, Jack Watts, Ellie Ford, Mike Dignam and George Ogilvie.
An Evening With Phil Cook
Megafaun, DeYarmond Edison, Gayngs, Shouting Matches, Hiss Golden Messenger... Phil Cook is a legend amongst the folk rock and americana world and we were treated last year when he performed an intimate show at The Latest Music Bar. Not only did Phil treat us to tracks from his most recent album he was backed by Brighton's very own The Hungry Mothers who were also the supporting act on the night. A rare and special songwriting talent and it was a masterclass that we'll remember for a long time.
The Great Escape Weekender: 2019
For four happy years we’ve basked in the beautiful May sunshine in the garden of The White Rabbit. Unfortunately, in true British fashion, that lucky streak couldn’t last forever. 2019’s all-day showcase saw us moving inside for the first time, but try as it might, the torrential downpour outside did nothing to dampen our spirits. With music from some of our favourite artists and just the right amount of dancing on tables, this rainy Brighton Saturday turned into a party we’ll never forget.
Perfect Day: Jack Morris & Friends
When Jack Morris took to the stage at our monthly showcase in July 2015, the audience had no idea he’d brought some very special guests with him. One of our favourite Folklore moments belongs to Jack’s suprise rendition of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day, accompanied by Gabrielle Aplin, Hudson Taylor, and Joe Keogh from Amber Run.
Folklore Vol. I
With 45 months of Folklore showcases under our belt, in the summer of 2018 we took things one step further and released a compilation record from our very own label. Folklore Vol. I featured 4 exclusive tracks from George Ogilvie, OKTOBA, Bess Atwell and Jacko Hooper alongside a hauntingly beautiful video of the four artists performing the Haddaway classic “What Is Love?” live at St. Mary’s Church.
Folklore Sessions returns on the 15th October at The White Rabbit for it's fifth birthday event. With music from Paper Hawk, Family Fiction, Jacko Hooper & Friends, and a very special surprise guest, this show is not one to miss...
