Folklore's Top 5: January Playlist Highlights

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

We're delighted to announce that our Folklore Sessions' Playlists are back and accepting new submissions.

2022 saw us rushed off our feet as we experienced our first full calendar year at our flagship venue The Folklore Rooms in Brighton. Hosting over 170 shows, from more than 350 artists, we spent the year in our cosy little corner of heaven, revelling in the best of the live sounds from the South East, and now we're beyond excited to get back to our favourite pastime: discovering new recorded music from all around the world.

The beginning of the year always feels a little dreary, but these gems brought a ray of sunshine to our otherwise rainy days. From upbeat tracks that make you want to jump around the living room, to soul-stirring lyrics, this month's update has something for everyone. So get ready to banish those winter blues and let the good vibes roll!

Portents - A.Wesley Chung

California-born and Glasgow based A.Wesley Chung released his sophomore album, Portents, at the tail-end of 2022. The title track is a 2 minute masterclass in making the listener fall in love at first snare.

With fuzzy, energetic guitars and a rhythmic refrain, this song is guaranteed to be spinning round your head long after the 120 seconds has finished. Charming and uniquely itself, Portents is without a doubt one of our favourite finds of the past few months.

Woven - Joshua Burnside

Joshua Burnside was born in Northern Ireland, where he draws inspiration from the beauty, the ugliness and the rich musical and literary heritage of an often tormented corner of the world.

The Folklore Community know that one sure-fire way to our hearts is music with strong trad influences and we couldn't get enough of the blend of electronic and traditional tones in Burnside's most recent EP: Late Afternoon in the Meadow.

Cowboy Cure - Carlsbad

Another transatlantic artist for our playlist, Carlsbad is a singer/songwriter hailing from America, now residing in Dublin. Her debut EP Future Yeehaw is exactly as it sounds, a post modern blend of electronic, pop, folk and country.

From the very first listen, we tumbled into the rich, dreamy soundscape of Cowboy Cure, and were more than happy to remain surrounded by sound as the song reached an iconic crescendo. Pour us a whiskey- we're onboard.

Moving On - Mark Diamond

Seattle-native Mark Diamond recently returned to his independent roots for his latest album Fell Asleep In Paradise, and we instantly fell in love with the hopeful, electronic Moving On.

There's a healthy dose of magic in this song, and Diamond know's exactly how to measure out the emotional hooks that keep you coming back for more.

“So be careful what you're living for my love

'Cause the hour's dark but the hardest parts behind us”

Hi’s&Lo’s - Cavalo55

Cavalo55 is the musical project of very well-travelled Simone Carugati, a multi-instrumentalist, folk singer-songwriter who currently resides in Portugal.

Hi’s&Lo’s is just a taster of what's to come with Cavalo55's upcoming EP Late Harvest, and if this song is anything to go by, we can see the record becoming one of our firm favourites of 2023.

We'll be updating our Spotify playlists every month with our favourite new sounds, so make sure you tune in frequently- you’re guaranteed to find one of your new favourite artists along the way.

If you'd like to submit your own songs for inclusion in our playlists, please send your Spotify links over to submissions@folkloresessions.co.uk

We can't wait to hear your music!

Please be aware that we receive a lot of submissions and we are a small team, we will listen to your music and respond when we can.
